Maldives Bans Smoking for Future Generations

Date:

(Web-Desk)-The Maldives has recently begun implementing a smoking ban, a landmark public health measure that has made it the only country with a generational prohibition on buying or using tobacco in order to promote a tobacco-free generation.

The significant move was initiated by the President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this month and came into effect on November 1.

In this connection, the ministry said, “The new initiative will protect public health and promote a tobacco-free generation.”

He further explained, “Under the new provision, individuals born on or after 1 January 2007 are prohibited from purchasing, using or being sold tobacco products within the Maldives.”

Furthermore, the new initiative will be applicable to visitors to the nation of 1,191 tiny coral islets scattered across the equator and known for its luxury tourism.

The ministry also maintains a complete prohibition on the import, sale, possession, and use of electronic cigarettes, which applies to all individuals regardless of age.

Following the current decision, selling tobacco products to an underage person will incur a penalty of 50,000 rufiyaa ($ 3,200); while using vape devices carries a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa ($ 320).

It has been observed that a similar generational ban has been imposed by authorities and is still going through the legislative process.

Ultimately, the Maldives generational smoking ban represents a unique and globally singular step for the nation in promoting public health safety to ensure a tobacco-free future.
