Trump thanks PM Shehbaz and ‘my favourite’ Asim Munir for Gaza peace efforts

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — At the landmark Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly thanked Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and “my favourite Field Marshal Asim Munir” for their instrumental roles in brokering the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, ending two years of devastating conflict.

World leaders from over 20 nations gathered to celebrate the agreement, which has been hailed as a turning point for regional stability. During the summit, President Trump invited Prime Minister Shehbaz to deliver a special address—one of the most widely viewed moments of the event.

Taking the podium, Shehbaz Sharif praised Trump as “a genuine man of peace,” lauding his tireless diplomatic efforts. “Today marks one of the greatest days in modern history,” Shehbaz declared. “Peace has been achieved after months of relentless diplomacy led by President Trump, who worked day and night to make this world a place of peace and prosperity.”

The Pakistani premier announced that his government had once again nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “extraordinary contributions” to global peace. He credited Trump with helping avert a full-scale war between India and Pakistan in the past and now bringing peace to the Middle East through the Gaza agreement.

“You are the man this world needed the most at this point in time,” Shehbaz said. “The world will remember you as the leader who stopped seven—and today, eight—wars.”

President Trump, visibly moved, responded with humor and gratitude. “Wow! I didn’t expect that. Let’s go home, there’s nothing more I have to say,” he quipped, drawing laughter and applause. “That was really beautiful and beautifully delivered.”

The summit, co-hosted by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, focused on formalizing the ceasefire and outlining the next phase of reconstruction and regional security. Attendees included British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and European Council President António Costa.

Although Israel and Hamas did not attend, both sides had agreed to the ceasefire and a prisoner exchange last week, facilitated by the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey. The truce follows two years of Israeli bombardment in Gaza, which claimed more than 67,000 lives.

The 20-point peace framework, brokered by Trump with support from eight Muslim-majority nations, aims to ensure the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and lay the foundation for lasting peace in the region.
